1.1 Background of the Study
Community events serve as platforms for fostering social cohesion, cultural exchange, and community development. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, community events range from cultural festivals and religious gatherings to development-focused programs. However, gender participation in these events often reflects broader societal norms and challenges, including cultural expectations, economic factors, and access to opportunities. While men frequently dominate public spaces, women’s participation may be limited due to traditional roles and societal constraints. According to Yusuf and Garba (2021), gender-balanced participation in community events enhances inclusivity and ensures equitable representation in decision-making processes. This study seeks to explore the dynamics of gender participation in community events in Sokoto South, shedding light on factors that influence participation and strategies to promote inclusivity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of community events in fostering development, gender disparities in participation remain a significant issue in Sokoto South. Women’s involvement is often limited by cultural norms, economic barriers, and a lack of targeted initiatives to encourage their participation. These disparities not only undermine inclusivity but also hinder the full potential of community events as tools for development. This study examines the factors influencing gender participation in community events and proposes strategies to address the existing gaps.
